Written in the shadow of World War I, when Stravinsky was trapped in Switzerland, “The Soldier’s Tale” is an adaptation of a classic Russian folktale about a young soldier returning from war, tempted by the devil to sell his violin (a metaphor for his soul) to the Devil in return for a book that promises immense wealth.
The Soldier learns the hard way that this true devil’s bargain will fail to bring you happiness, and that you can’t “go home again”. With an ensemble consisting of three actors, a dancer, seven instrumentalists, and a conductor, this mobile tour-de-force theater production highlights true virtuoso performances from incredible musicians in one of the most consequential works of the 20th century by one of its greatest composers.
